In our tough times, it is more important than ever to have the skills to say what we need to say in a way that connects us to other poeple (See article in "Consider This")
I thought about this recently when I attended a Seminar sponsored by The Employee Assistance Program Association of Toronto (www.eapat.org) given by Dr. Martin Shain.
The speaker pointed out that in the workplace, most people get their positions because of their technical expertise. Then they find their interpersonal skills begin to hold them back.
The speaker caught my attention there. I wanted to say out loud, "Exactly!...and that can be changed". We are usually so busy getting the job done we forget to work on our communication skils.
But it is never too late. Communicating Effectively is a learned behaviour. And all behaviour can be learned, relearned and modified. We can make "people talking to people effectively" as important as our technical expertise.
In our tough times, it is more important then ever to have the skills to say what we need to say in a way that connects us to other people.
